English Classes
At the ETC, Rachel offers a variety of classes designed to meet the diverse needs of children. Children are carefully placed into groups with peers who are working at the same English level and share similar interests. This thoughtful placement ensures that lessons are planned to be both engaging and relevant to each child. We provide options to support every stage of English learning, creating a fun and supportive environment for every student.
Homework activity by Naomi (8 years old).
The activity followed a word classes lesson. The homework was to write a description about someone and include proper nouns, common nouns, adjectives and similes. Well done Naomi!
Childrens Group Classes
At The ETC, we offer a diverse range of small classes for children in English. Classes have a maximum of 6 children. Rachel takes great care in placing each child in the right class based on their learning level and interests. Children are first invited to the ETC to meet Rachel and see the classroom environment. During this visit, children take part in fun and interactive English activities so that Rachel can assess their English level in a relaxed, inviting setting.
Though it may feel like playtime to your child, these activities help determine the most suitable class for them. By thoughtfully placing children with peers at the same level, Rachel ensures that every student thrives in a supportive and well-matched learning environment.

The Bronze group class, also known as Early Readers, is tailored to meet the needs of children at the early stages of English proficiency.
For native English speakers or those with some English-speaking background, this level introduces a specially designed phonics program that covers 23 letters and sounds. Children learn the 'pure' sounds of the alphabet, practice reading and writing simple words, and engage in interactive games and activities. The class focuses on correct letter formation and high-frequency words, and nurtures listening and speaking skills through storytelling and discussions. By the end of the course, children will be able to read short stories and write words and simple sentences, laying a solid foundation for their literacy development.
For non-native English speakers with little to no English speaking, a separate Bronze level is available. This class provides foundational support, focusing on the basics of the English language, including introductory phonics, simple vocabulary, and fundamental listening and speaking skills.
Both versions of the Bronze class aim to build a strong foundation in literacy and language skills.

In the Silver group (also known as Progressive Readers), students build on the foundation established in the Bronze classes. This stage introduces 25 more complex sounds and focuses on developing reading and writing stamina. Emphasis is placed on expanding vocabulary, reading more complex texts with a variety of words and sounds, and playing games to consolidate learning in fun and interactive ways. Handwriting skills and correct sentence structure are key focuses, along with encouraging creative writing and imaginative use of language. Listening and speaking skills are further developed through structured conversations and presentations, enhancing students' ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
-
In the Gold group (Advanced Readers), students consolidate previously taught English skills while introducing a new set of 28 sounds and complex letter patterns, including alternative spellings. The Gold group aims to develop fluency in both reading and writing, helping students read with greater confidence and write with increasing accuracy, complexity, and creativity. Emphasis is placed on expanding vocabulary, understanding word classes (nouns, verbs, adjectives), and using correct punctuation and grammar. Children are encouraged to write more descriptively and imaginatively, further developing their ability to construct well-formed sentences and longer texts. Listening and speaking skills are also enhanced through structured conversations, discussions, and presentations, ensuring students can express their ideas clearly and listen effectively to others.

The Platinum group (Fluent Readers) is designed for students ready to master advanced reading and writing skills. This course covers all key areas of the English curriculum, including reading comprehension, advanced phonics, and vocabulary expansion. Students will delve into various literary genres, improve their grammar and punctuation, and develop their writing styles across different formats, such as stories, reports, advertisements, and poems. Emphasis is also placed on enhancing listening and speaking skills through discussions, presentations, and debates, ensuring students can articulate their ideas clearly and confidently. Additionally, children will be taught how to think critically, exploring fake news and evidence-based reading. The Platinum group aims to foster a deep understanding and love of the English language, preparing students for more complex literacy challenges ahead.
